Folding Prefold Cloth Diapers

DSQ Prefold Diaper on BabyOf all the diapering systems available, prefold cloth diapers are the most economical choice and still the most popular type, overall, of cloth diapers used. Prefold cloth diapers are often called DSQ (Diaper Service Quality) prefolds, or Chinese prefolds. All of the prefolds offered at Wildflower Diapers are diaper service quality prefolds made of unbleached cotton and sewn in the more absorbent 4x8x4 panels. This means that each diaper has a center panel of 8 layers of cotton and two side panels of 4 layers each. Many stores sell the less absorbent 4x6x4 or even a 2x3x2, neither of which will offer as much absorbency as the DSQ 4x8x4 prefolds.

Folding prefold cloth diapers is nowhere near as complicated as it looks! Remember, the object is to get something absorbent between baby's legs. It doesn't have to be perfect, or look pretty. You will be changing 12-14 diapers a day for newborns, so you will be a pro in no time at all. We show people how to use prefolds dozens of times each day in our store, so we decided to snap some photos of the process (using our cuddly teddy bear model, who was a bit less squirmy for photo purposes!).

Basic Fold (Newspaper Fold)

This is your basic DSQ prefold diaper. It has 3 panels- 8 layers of cotton for the middle panel, and 4 layers on each side panel. Lay it in front of you vertically. Shorten the length of the prefold to fit your baby's length by folding up from the bottom (or down from the top- either way will work) Fold the sides in to make diaper narrow enough to come up between baby's legs.

Add baby! (most people will lay baby on prefold first, and do steps 2 and 3 with baby already there) Bring diaper up between baby's legs, and then bring top right and left corners (wings) around baby's waist to meet front of diaper. Hold diaper snugly in place.

Attach one side of Snappi diaper fastener by letting teeth of fastener grab outermost layer of cotton. Snappis stretch very far, so don't be afraid to start on one hip. Stretch Snappi over to other hip, grabbing wing on opposite side. Stretch bottom prong down to secure fastener.

Make sure diaper is snug around baby's thighs and waist. If gaps or excess fabric at thighs, roll and tuck fabric in toward leg. Put cover over diaper. Make sure all bits of diaper are completely enclosed in diaper cover, and that cover is on snugly around thighs and waist.
